We love to use our slow cooker several times a month in our family. Having something cooking all day, filling the house with delicious aromas is so welcoming after a day of work, errands or school. There’s so many different things you can cook in your slow cooker, but there’s only a few recipes my family gravitates towards and this is one of them.

I first learned to make sausage and peppers in my slow cooker from one of my dear neighbor friends. It’s not something I had ever thought of, I mean slow cookers are for tough meats and beans usually. But something magical happens to Italian sausage that has been slow cooked. It becomes the most tender, melt in your mouth sausage perfection you’ve ever had.

You can use any type of pasta sauce you have on hand, but for this particular dish I used Ragú® Old World Style®. It was my Mom’s favorite and my go to. They even carry it at our quicky mart. I can run in and grab some Ragú and pasta and dinner is done in less that 20 minutes, and that’s from when I leave the house to pick up the ingredients!

For this recipe I just added a mixture of hot and sweet Italian sausages, onion, garlic, colorful bell peppers and Ragú to my slow cooker. Then after a generous dose of good red wine, I turned it to low andwent about my day. After it was done, we just ate it with a simple salad and some hearty bread. It was an amazing meal!

Cook Time:   8 - 10 hours

A generous pour of red wine is very much recommended for this recipe. The wine adds so much flavor to this recipe. I like to use between 1/2 - 1 cup of dry red wine. Of course, it is optional for those who don't cook with alcohol.

Ingredients:

4 links sweet Italian sausage
4 links hot Italian sausage
1 of each - red, green and yellow bell pepper, sliced
1 sweet onion, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 jar Ragú® Old World Style® Traditional Sauce
1 large bunch basil, torn
Hearty bread

Directions:

Brown sausage. Add all ingredients to slow cooker except basil and bread. Turn to low and cook for 6 - 8 hours.

Serve over fresh bread garnished with fresh basil.
