Southern Comfort Food: Biscuits and Gravy

I have procrastinated about sharing my favorite breakfast recipe, because it is just so easy, and I assumed everyone knows how to make it already. But I recently remembered I didn’t learn how to make it until I was 27. My mother never made this when I was growing up because she had a strong aversion to almost anything dairy because of her lactose intolerance. When my Dad and I got a craving for biscuits and gravy, we always went to a diner or the local Hardee’s.
I learned this easy recipe from my older sister, who I rarely see, but was visiting shortly after my mother’s death. I watched her quickly throw together three ingredients to make both of our favorite breakfasts in a jiff. She, like most Southern women, has given up on making homemade biscuits except for special occasions. So for this simple breakfast, she and I both bake frozen biscuits. Our favorite brand: Mary B’s in the frozen food isle.

Biscuits and Gravy Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground breakfast sausage (I like Odom’s Tennessee Pride)
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 2 cups milk
- salt and pepper to taste
Method
- Brown sausage in skillet. After sausage is done, add flour and cook for 2 – 3 minutes. Add milk and turn heat to medium. Bring to a boil while stirring constantly. Reduce to a simmer and simmer about 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve over hot biscuits.

This is one of my favorites too. You inspired me to make this treat this weekend. Biscuits and Gravy are some of my favorite breakfast foods, too bad they can not be enjoyed all of the time. The calorie content makes them an occasional treat.
I make biscuits and gravy A LOT! We have biscuits and gravy for supper when I’m in a hurry to get dinner on the table and sometimes I make it with hamburger too. I usually make the biscuits because I never remember to buy them at the store. Great post!
Must thank you for sharing this recipe with us. Sounds like some really nice memories of your mom too
xo
Cool! Stumbled across this and I’m giving it a thumbs up!B&G were always my very favorite growing up. (During a growth spurt i once or twice put away a WHOLE CAN of biscuits. with gravy!) My grandma makes them the BEST and she is the one who taught me; I too did not learn to make biscuits and gravy until I was 27 which I still happen to be now. So basically I learned to make this in the last six months! And it has become a hit with my boyfriend and even our friends will show up early on the weekends to have some. Can you believe its so EASY?
Here’s to breakfast!
I adore biscuits and gravy. One of the restaurants I used to work in served it, and it was my go-to breakfast. Yours looks delightful.
Oh my goodness. I love biscuits and gravy. Love it. Especially with sausage.
I want this now more than anything on earth. Thank you for reminding me of one of the good reasons to be alive.

Oh, you know I love this one! Of course, I’ve had my share of biscuits and gravy. And, you’re so right – those Mary B’s biscuits are the next best thing to homemade. Great job.
