Are you ready to send the kids back to school? Our family has had a wonderful summer full of pool, beach and camping adventures, but I’m ready to get back into a routine and send my son off to 5th grade this year! We’ve already gone shopping for school supplies, teacher supplies, and new school clothes too. My son can’t wait for the new year to begin.

Last year I wasn’t the best at planning school lunches for my son, especially towards the end of the year. Honestly, he was lucky to get a peanut butter hot dog bun and possibly a piece of fruit. I’m going to change that this year though by putting the responsibility of packing school lunches in my son’s hands! I’ve made a plan to stock these bins once a week for school lunches.

As far as bin categories, I have one for fruits, one for veggies, one for dairy and one for pantry type snacks so my son can make his own lunch complete with yummy Welch’s Fruit Snacks!

For the protein, I’ll be making a sandwich or wrap fresh each day with either rotisserie chicken, leftover roast beef or pork loin. If there’s no leftover meats, I’ll make a peanut butter, or another nut or seed butter, and jelly sandwich.

For the fruit bin I’ve included apples, peaches, bananas and grapes. You can also include those delicious little mandarin oranges, strawberries, or cut up pineapples.

For the veggie bin, I’ve included my son’s favorites. I have a bag with grape tomatoes and cucumbers, one with celery and baby carrots, and another with sweet peppers and broccoli florets.

For the dairy bin, I’ve included an assortment of snacking cheeses and some individual yogurt cups. You could also make your own yogurt cups with plain yogurt, honey, and fresh berries.

For the dry goods, I’ve included some favorites. I have bagged pretzels, popcorn, and veggie straws. I’ve also included Welch’s Fruit Snacks. My son always complained last year that all the other kids had special treats at lunchtime, but he never did. So when I suggested Welch’s Fruit Snacks, he jumped for joy!
