Christmas Reindeer and Angel Wooden Yard Decorations DIY
We started decorating for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. We went to a Christmas tree farm, got a fresh tree and brought it home to decorate it. The next day we spent decorating the outside of the home. Now for outdoor decorations, I like to use things that you can see both in the day AND at night. For us it’s important to have decorations you can clearly see outside during the day since most of the traffic in front of our home is in the daylight hours.
To achieve those day decorations, we like to use DIY plywood Christmas cutouts. These reindeer shown above were made by a friend last year. They were all white with red bows, but this year I spray painted the antlers glittery gold. They are so cute!
This year my husband made these two pretty plywood angel cutouts for the other side of our yard. These are painted white with the same glittery gold paint on their halos. Then I added pretty sparkly gold ribbons on their waists. SO cute!
These reindeer are very easy. You can buy the pattern online or download it, cut it out, trace it, and get your jigsaw out.
The parent reindeers are about the same size, one with head down, and one with the head up.
And here’s the baby!
The angels are a bit more difficult to do, but are well worth the effort. We have one with her wings up and one with her wings down.
The cost of these will vary depending on how much your materials are. You’ll need three sheets of plywood to make all the decorations. You can find the reindeer patterns on Amazon and angel patterns on WoodWorkerWorkshop.com.
For the paint, I used leftover white house paint, and just rolled it on with a roller. I also rolled the parts that I was going to paint gold.
Then for the gold I used a metallic gold spray paint, not the really shiny paint. Then on top of that I used glitter gold spray paint.
To anchor the decorations so they don’t fall over, I used leftover yard stakes from older blow up Christmas decorations and used screw eye rings screwed into the bottom of the decorations to anchor them down.
And here is a new decoration we did last year! You can purchase the pattern for Joy on Amazon
