Apple Ham Steak Skillet with Cheddar Grits

This post sponsored by Smithfield. All thoughts and opinions 100% mine.

It’s hard to realize, but fall is upon us! The kids have upcoming fall festivals at their schools, lots of football games to go to and my daughter even has a fun farm day planned with her class. I can’t wait to go pick out pumpkins next month and to go apple picking in a few weeks.

Every year we plan to make a quick weekend trip to go apple picking and hopefully this year we actually get to go! But life can feel so busy and messy too with three little ones. Between the dirty diapers, muddy shoes and crazy art projects, this house is a mess. It never seems like there’s enough time in the day to get it all done.

So even if we don’t make it to North Carolina, at least we’ll make it to the farmer’s market. Or who am I kidding, we’ll probably just make it to the local grocery store and pick lots of big juicy delicious apples there. The kids will be happier anyway not having to spend so many hours in the truck.

This family definitely isn’t Pinterest Perfect. We’re real, messy and dinner is always rushed. I’m always trying to think of new and delicious meals to share with the family that are seasonal, simple and delicious.

One of my favorite ways to save time on dinner is to make breakfast for dinner. The kids love it, it’s super simple and budget friendly too.

This apple ham steak is one of my favorite breakfast for dinner meals. I also love it because it has big juicy apples in it!  It’s not too sweet and the ham steak pairs so perfectly with the apples. It’s really simple, easy and a real crowd pleaser!

I start by making some simple cheddar grits. These are easy. I always just make grits by adding salt and grits to boiling water till the souls of my southern ancestors whisper that’s enough child. Then I simmer until they’re perfectly creamy and lots of mild cheddar till the voices say slow down woman. But you could also just read the directions on the back of the package of grits, and then add a little cheese at the end.

For the ham steak, I use my favorite go-to ham steak from Smithfield. This is the Smithfield Anytime Favorites Ham steak. I pick up a few of these every time I’m at the grocery store. You can easily freeze them so you always have one on hand anytime you want!

I start by cooking the ham steak in a medium skillet and lightly browning it on each side. Then I remove it and add apple slices and thinly sliced red onions.

I sauce this until it’s tender crisp. Then in another bowl I mix applesauce and heavy cream. This is a little different, but trust me!

Next, while the apples are still in the pan, add a  few tablespoons of water to deglaze the skillet. You could also use apple juice or apple cider for a sweeter taste. I like water here though.

Then add the cream and applesauce mixture and toss everything around and add the ham back. Simmer for just a minute or two more and it’s done!

You can find Smithfield Anytime Favorites Hickory Smoked 8 oz. Boneless Ham Steak at your favorite grocery store nationwide in the meat department. Be sure to pick up some on your next grocery shopping trip!
