Basil Lemonade

Lemonade will always be my favorite summer drink, even more so than sweet tea. It’s just so refreshing, crisp and wonderful. It’s perfect for parties, barbecues, or just lounging around the pool.

While a simple glass of lemonade is perfection in it’s own right, I do love to experiment by adding new flavors. And since the basil in my garden is just about outs control, I decided to make some fresh Basil Lemonade.

This lemonade is so simple, you just take some basil leaves and bruise them in some sugar. Then add some warm water to dissolve the sugar and bring even more of the flavors in the basil out. Then add the lemon juice and some ice.

Remember my last post about our raised bed vegetable garden? Well, check it out now! Everything is growing like crazy. All my tomatoes, squash and pepper plants are blooming right now, so hopefully we’ll have a large harvest this summer. And Coco says hi!

My herbs have really taken off. I want to add a  few more to this bed, from my windowsill. I’ve never had basil grow like this before. The growth on my basil plants is usually stunted by the heat. But this plant is really doing well.

I want to keep this garden as organic as possible, so I used  Nature’s Care potting mix. They also have a new plant food perfect for our little garden. They both have natural formulas and are perfect for edible gardening.

They also have several organic all natural pesticides to product our crops from our little insect friends. These are my favorite, since we live in Florida and we have so many garden pests. I can’t wait to see the results of these new products come harvest time. We’re hoping for lots of tomatoes, squash and fresh herbs this summer!


Yield: 2 quarts

Basil Lemonade

1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 cup sugar
2 cups hot water
6 - 8 basil leaves, plus additional for garnish
ice and additional water


Add sugar and basil leaves to the bottom of a pitcher. Using a muddler, bruise the leaves. Add hot water. Mix well until sugar dissolves. Add lemon juice, ice and enough water to fill a 2 quart pitcher. Mix well.

Pour over ice to serve.
