Better Breakfast, Better you and a $100 Visa Card Giveaway from Jimmy Dean

This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Jimmy Dean, however the opinions and feelings expressed here are my own.

We’re just a few days from the start of the new year, and I already have my list of New Year’s resolutions. This year I will be making better choices for myself and my family. I am going to try always offer the most nutritious selections in food for my family and make sure we get in all the protein, fruits and veggies that we may lack some days now. I also want us to get lots of physical activity in our lives, by visiting our gym regularly and participating in more outdoor activities. And lastly, I am going to incorporate strategies to help family happiness by trying maintain a balance between all these activities and balancing the household chores and work. I know it’s alot to try to accomplish, but there’s no time like the new year to try to incorporate better choices.

First and foremost, I want to get a handle on the amount I eat. The hardest choice I make in my day to day life what to eat and when to stop eating. Portion control is so hard for me. If you haven’t noticed, I seem to have a love affair with food, and all types. I love healthy food, full fat foods, sweet things, salty things, and the list goes on and on. Even foods that I though I didn’t like years ago, like casseroles, I’ve learned to create them into dishes that I crave.

And all this food indulgence has lead to a problem, a little extra weight around my stomach, hips and thighs. Right now I’m about 15 pounds overweight, all of which I gained after weaning my son. Fortunately, I was able to lose all my baby weight pretty fast and kept it off as long as I was nursing, but started gaining weight slowly as he started eating more and more solid foods, and then continued to gain after he had been completely weaned, until I finally leveled off over the summer. Several months ago, we started a gym, but have yet to see any changes because we haven’t made any dietary changes and haven’t been going as much as I think we should be.

Starting this new year, things are going to change though, we are going to make better choices in our diet. Next week, we are off to the mountains of West Virginia for a ski vacation. We wanted to start the year off with a really fun activity. During this time, we’ll also be starting our new diet choices. We’re going to enforce our portion control and make sure we eat a protein packed breakfast every morning. The last time I had to lose weight several years ago, I did it pretty easily by having a high protein breakfast and incorporating lots of exercise. By making sure I added protein at breakfast, it kept me fuller longer.

Having adequate amounts of protein in your diet is essential. An average amount of protein I try to achieve each day is 50 grams. The last time I was on a diet and incorporating more protein, I was adding protein shakes and bars to my diet, which of all the countless ones I’ve tried, taste terrible. Thankfully, there are better options to easily incorporate high protein foods in our diet, besides those tasteless supplements. Jimmy Dean’s new line of tasty D-Lights Breakfast sandwiches and breakfast bowls have less than 12 grams of fat and up to 23 grams of protein. They are the perfect, easy way to start your day. You can find more about them at Jimmy Dean’s Official site, and you can find out more about the benefits of protein at breakfast here.

The last time I was on a diet and incorporating more protein, I was adding protein shakes and bars to my diet, which of all the countless ones I’ve tried, taste terrible. Thankfully, there are better options to easily incorporate high protein foods in our diet, besides those tasteless supplements. They are the perfect, easy way to start your day. You can find more about them at Jimmy Dean’s Official site.

We also want to add a few more days to our gym schedule to help kick start our weight loss. We already go 3 times a week, sometimes 2, if something comes up. We want to do 5 times a  week at least for January and February. On two of the days, we do weight lifting and cardio. One day is for upper body, and the other day is for the lower body. We change up our routine continuously by doing different free weight exercises, machines, and and group muscle exercises. On a third day we add core and ab exercises. We do different basic ab exercises, as well as Swiss ball, Pilates and yoga exercises. On the two days I want to add to our schedule we’ll either be doing cardio in a spin class or just on one of the machines.
Another important change I want to make in the new year is keeping my home tidy and organized. I am the world’s worst about procrastinating until the house is a mess, and then spending all day, sometimes two, doing a massive cleaning. I want to take a few minutes each day and clean. I know having a clean and uncluttered house is the first step in keeping your mind clear so you can focus on the things you love to do, and spend less time cleaning.

So now for the fun part! Tell me in the comment section below what better choices you would like to make this year for yourself and you’ll be entered to win a $100 V1sa card from Jimmy Dean.

I’ve given this a lot of thought over the past month and I definitely want to create more balance in my life. Saying yes to everyone and everything over the past months has worn me out, and I need to allow myself to say no sometimes. It will ripple into creating more balance at home for my family too.

  2. Heather Spooner — December 28, 2010 @ 11:31 am

I would like to find more fun ways to be active. I quickly get bored with exercise routines.

  3. JulieD — December 28, 2010 @ 11:49 am

When it comes to sweets, I always ask myself if it’s worth it. It has to be homemade or something I really like before I endure the calories. 🙂 And the better choice I need to make is to make it to spinning class at least once a week.

  4. Lori — December 28, 2010 @ 4:26 pm

I am jumping back on the exercise bandwagon. Hubby bought me a pair of running shoes for Christmas that I need to put to use!

  5. Caroline — December 28, 2010 @ 8:31 pm

Less dessert….actually, cutting out dessert on the week days and save it for a treat on the weekends is what I am planning on doing to make my life a little healthier. 🙂

In 2011 I plan to Zumba at least 3 times a week and keep a food journal.

  8. LAMusing — December 28, 2010 @ 8:51 pm

I need to add some form of regular exercise to my life – the kind I can maintain. Right now it’s erratic – some weeks I exercise every day, other weeks not at all. I live on the beach, so I’m thinking walking the path along the shore for 30 minutes 5 days a week would be enjoyable and manageable. If I have time/energy for more – great!
I also need to cut back on my smoking. Yeah, I need to quit – but that feels like setting myself up to fail. Then I’d just chuck the whole idea. So instead I’m shooting for cutting back by 1/2. That seems do-able! And who knows, maybe success at that will inspire me to quit completely.
If at the end of 2011 I’m exercising twice as much and only smoking half as much I’ll count it as a big win for my health!

I want to drop all of my pregnancy weight now that my son will be TWO in April! Therefore, we will be walking a lot more. I started walking daily in October but since we are in New York… too cold now! So – I will be supplementing by cleaning in order to move around. Sounds so simple but otherwise we will be just sitting around playing (and packing on the pounds). Going to give the house a real head to toe cleaning daily until it warms up again…. grr… hopefully sooner than later!!

I have resolved to actually eat breakfast in the morning. Usually I just run out of the house and don’t even think about it. So by mid-morning, I am starving and I have to go the vending machine to get something to snack on. So by eating a healthy breakfast every day, I should be able to curb all of the snacking that I do.

  102. Susan E. — January 4, 2011 @ 3:56 pm

I eat 7-10 veg/fruits a day. go to the gym 3 days a week, but most importantly…I adopted a shelter dog 6 mths. ago. Doggy requires lots of walks, se we do 3 or 4 30 min. walks to the park and add in 15 min. of fetch. For me it’s the combo of lowfat, grains, veggies, consistent/daily movement and the love of my puppy!!

First of all — I totally agree with your review of the Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches. Had one this a.m. and it was delish! In terms of making better choices for 2011, hoping to make it to the gym 4 times a week. I’m going to make this an average, cause I already busted that number last week! The other is more about my mental healty — trying to exercise more patience with others and realizing that I can only control so much.

Instead of resolutions, I’ve decided that every year I’m going to learn something new or try something I’ve never done before. I always felt weird that I didn’t know how to swim so this year I signed up for swimming lessons at our local community college. Not only will I learn a new skill, I’m hoping to get healthier with some much-needed exercise.

  159. Scout's Honor — January 14, 2011 @ 2:13 pm

I have pledged to walk on the treadmill when I am watching tv or my computer–which is about 4-6 hours a day since I blog for a living. Nothing crazy. I set up a makeshift board “desk”across the bars. I go 2 mph (slow) so I can type and remain balanced. Yesterday I racked up a crazy 1400 calories burned and besides being a bit warm while typing and only a bit sore this morning, I didn’t even notice that I was working out.

Why? The weight has crept up since my last pregnancy nine years ago. I spend my time at sports practices and driving to school events or worse, on my computer on my butt for work. Can anyone say sedentary??

No, I’ve developed fatty liver disease. Ugh. So on the treadmill I go. Wish me luck. I wish you all luck!!

  183. I was shocked when I saw the topic of this post, because I *love* Jimmy Dean D-Lite Breakfast Sandwiches. I’m a teacher, and have to eat my breakfast really early and pretty quickly. 187. Eileen — January 20, 2011 @ 8:51 pm

I know a better breakfast can make a better day for me…I usually ditch it all together or eat so late that it messes up my eating schedule and metabolism. To better help this, I need to eat MORE throughout the day, Healthy foods…starting with breakfast. I know the “starve” is not good and the whole DIET thing I am SO tired of. With kids in school I don’t worry about feeding myself “normal” anymore until dinner. I’d like to get to a point this year that I can be on track, eat like a normal woman again…where food is just FOOD and not an enemy, enjoy it and let be a tool to improve my rotten health. After that, I can work on getting my MOVE on again and stop being a couch slouch. Having chronic illness doesn’t mean you should stop working on yourself just because you have been “dealt” a rotten hand…it means you have to work harder and better at keeping healthy!
Hope I can put these better choices into ACTION!

I have made a choice the last few years to eat well and help my kids eat better. Although i do not eat the Jimmy D sandwiches, my kids LOVE them. they get some protein, carbs and even a little dairy with the cheese. I feel like it is a much better way for them to start their day than a bowl of sugar cereal!

  195. Pat — January 23, 2011 @ 11:36 am

I love food and I admit I’m not as careful as I should be watching calories, so I made a commitment this year to be more active and to eat more vegetables and fruits and less processed foods and red meat. I save one day a week for indulging in a dessert or some other food which I enjoyed in the past but was not particularly healthy. I have to admit this Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich looks delicious! 🙂

  196. Debra F — January 23, 2011 @ 6:03 pm

After years of resolving to simply eat less to try to lose weight (and never being successful), this year I changed my resolution to add to my diet; specifically more fiber. I know I don’t get enough fiber in my diet, so I’m adding high fiber foods to each meal. It is much easier to keep this resolution, and I actually do feel better physically.

  197. Aisling — January 24, 2011 @ 12:05 pm

I’m definitely going to try these Jimmy Dean D-lights. I like to have a “good” breakfast, but sometimes that means having one that’s too heavy or not healthy. I’ve been eating lots of oatmeal lately (perfect for this time of year), but I need some other good choices. mcgillrmcgill(at)charter(dot)net

My kids and I are trying to eat healthier. I decided to get them involved and it’s worked great! I let them scoure the internet for recipes, they send me a shopping list for items we don’t have available and put it together when I get home. It’s been great so far!

I would like to make better choices in several areas of my life starting with my diet-I would like to make sure I eat a healthy breakfast every morning instead of skipping this important meal.

The better choice I’m making in this new year is to drink water when I’m thirsty, not soda.

  253. Suzanne K — January 30, 2011 @ 12:34 am

My top better choice is eating a good breakfast daily (I’m not quite there yet) – either oatmeal and raisins (and maybe some nuts for protein) or a sunnyside up egg on whole wheat toast. When I’m good at that, I’ll move on to lunch and dinner… throwing some more activity in for a good measure!

More walking, more water and more sleep!

By continue eating lots of protein, many greens and I cut out dairy and most carbs, I am able to feel well and lose weight easily. Continue daily exercise, too.
A friend who is in her 20s yesterday said I was thinner and I told her why becuase of my diet for my health and I exercise. She said she hopes to look like me when she is 55. Made me feel good because I work at it and this is the way to be healthy and stay slim for me.
