A Fresh Approach to Green Bean Casserole
Happy Thanksgiving! This easy recipe for green bean casserole uses only fresh ingredients to make the most delicious casserole you’ve ever had. It’s simple to make and tastes so good!
While regular Campbell’s green bean casserole is pretty tasty, I like to use fresh ingredients whenever possible in my cooking. I created this delicious green bean casserole using fresh ingredients and a homemade sauce that includes sour cream. This casserole is so tasty, you’ll forget all about that Campbell’s version. This recipe was created for Babble’s Family Kitchen.
To make this you start by making a simple roux with flour and butter. Bring it to a bubble and let it cook until it smells nutty. Next you season with salt and pepper, onion and garlic powder. Then slowly add in milk to make the sauce and bring it to a simmer. You can also add a little nutmeg if you like at this step. It adds a great little flavor. When the sauce is done, set aside.
In a large bowl, combine the fresh green beans, onions and fresh mushrooms. Add the sauce you just prepared, more milk, sour cream and don’t forget the Worcestershire sauce! It adds that special flavor that makes a Thanksgiving green bean casserole taste so good!
For the topping, I like to use Panko or crushed crackers on this green bean casserole because the onions are already in the casserole. You can add homemade or canned fried onions to the top if you like, but be sure to add them in the last 15 minutes of cooking so they don’t burn.
