Homemade Gifts: Spice Blends

spic blends in jarsThis post brought to you by Craftsy.

Every year I try to make s a little homemade something to give to friends and family. Sometimes it’s embroidered kitchen towels, other times it’s homemade candy. Last year I did homemade vanilla extract everyone just loved. This year I decided to go with these tasty homemade spice blends. I use these little homemade gifts to accompany gift cards. I think it makes giving money a little more personable. And the best part is these types of homemade gifts are super easy to make.

For the spice blends, I decided to go with these three, a blackened seasoning blend, a BBQ rub and a Espresso Rub. These spice blends can be jarred in little jelly jars as shown, or any other jar you find at your local craft store. You could put them in a basket with a pretty kitchen towel and a new oven mitt for a friend or neighbor. Or you could just give them with a gift card like I do.

To wrap these, I just used a piece of burlap to cover the metal lid and a small bow. Then I added a gift tag on top. You could use any type of scrap fabric accompanied with ribbon to wrap these.

You can find the recipes for these rubs at Craftsy, or just Google some ideas for spice rubs. I’ll be posting my own recipes for these rubs in the next few weeks.

I got these ideas for these spice blend gifts by taking an online crafting course at Craftsy. They offer online crafting classes, taught by world renowned instructors who love the craft as much as we do. All Craftsy classes are online, so they are available anytime you want for as long as you want. The course I took was Sweet & Savory Food Gifts. The course consisted of several homemade gift ideas, plus tips and tricks for packaging and wrapping them.

Taking the Craftsy class was pretty cool. You can ask your instructor questions, upload photos, and even get personalized responses. You can also participate in discussions with your classmates. There’s even access supporting class materials – including recipes and helpful tips & tricks.

I think the course is great for people who like to learn more about crafting and cooking and have the time to sit through these videos. Admittedly, I have no a spare time to take an live actual course, so being able to take a course from the comfort of my home was pretty appealing. But this video wasn’t a neat and tidy, ton-of-info-in-a-short amount of time kind of video, it was pretty slow. I ended up skipping much of the video, and just watched some highlights. However, if there’s any reason you aren’t 100% satisfied, they are happy to honor their 100% refund guarantee, just fill out their Money Back Guarantee form.
