Organizing and Stocking the Freezer

I really get into the spring cleaning spirit  this time of year. I like to clean out every closet, drawer and corner of my home. Organization is something that I am always striving to better at, especially in the kitchen.

One of the places I’ve been neglecting is my deep freezer. I have a smaller deep freezer that I like to keep stocked with meats, frozen fruits and vegetables and goodies for the kids. And truthfully, it’s a complete mess. I just keep adding foods after I go shopping and I have no idea what’s buried in the bottom of that thing.

So since today was my grocery shopping day,  I took the time today to clean it out. I removed every last package of food and cleaned it out with a warm towel and removed the excess ice. Looks nice and empty doesn’t it? I didn’t want to share the before picture, it was too embarrassing! So let’s just start with a clean slate, shall we?

Today I also picked up some inexpensive plastic bins to help sort all my frozen foods. These bins fit perfectly  in my deep freezer and are a great way to separate my foods so I can find them better. There are lots of different size options. I like these deeper large ones for the deep freezer. Smaller ones would be perfect for refrigerator freezers.

When I got to Walmart, I took the time to buy lots of good foods to stock up my freezer. March is a great time to celebrate frozen foods by stocking up on essentials that you can have on hand for quick and easy recipe ideas and dinner solutions. I purchased lots of fresh meats I could freeze as well as frozen veggies, fruits, potatoes, prepared meals that are perfect for quick meals.

When I got home, I separated my beef, chicken and pork, fish and potatoes, prepared meats, veggies and fruits all in different bins. These categories seemed to make the most sense for our family, but you can categorize your freezer with what works best for your family.

On the bottom of the freezer I place my meats.

Then I add more meats, fish and potatoes.

Next comes all the frozen fruit and veggies. I like to keep these on top because we need to eat more of them!

You can see on the side I have a basket where I have even more veggies. I usually keep sweet treats here, but it’s Spring, and everyone in our family is trying to lose a few pounds, so we’re stocked up on even more fruits and veggies!

Under the basket I have an extra chicken and some easy prepared frozen foods.

frozen pre-prepared meals

Every week, I make sure to stock up on several easy to prepare frozen meals like these. They’re perfect for easy lunches, quick dinners or on the go breakfasts.

Here I have some of our favorite selections from Conagra Frozen Foods available at Walmart.
