Steak Sandwich with Spicy Mayonnaise

sandwich

This is one of my guilty pleasures, using Steak-Umms to prepare steak sandwiches, or adding cheese to it to make a Philly. Now I know it’s not a real Philly, not even close, but it’s so good. Steak-umm’s brings back found childhood memories, and is one of the few pre-prepared foods I still purchase. And do you remember that silly jingle? If you head over to Babble through the link below to see the recipe, you’ll also see a video of their vintage ad. To make this sandwich really special, I make my own spicy mayonnaise just the way I like it, a recipe shared by a dear friend.

Ingredients:

1 – 2 lb package Steak-umms, or 2 lbs very thinly sliced sirloin
1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
1/2 red bell pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 – 8 oz, or a small container of mushrooms, I used baby bella
a drizzle of olive oil, about 1 tablespoon
salt and pepper to taste
Sub Rolls, or 2 baguettes cut in half
sliced mild cheddar, optional

For the Spicy Mayonnaise:
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon grainy mustard
2 tablespoons horseradish
a few dashes of hot sauce, to taste

Directions:

1. Preheat a large skillet. Add steak. Add bell peppers, onions and mushrooms. Add salt and pepper. Saute over medium heat until meat is browned and mushrooms are tender.

Note: I just chop up the steaks with a spatula or spoon. I’ve tried to make the steaks whole, but it’s so difficult to keep them in one piece, and in my opinion, it makes no difference in how the dish tastes in the end.

2. While meat and vegetables are cooking, add all ingredients for spicy mayonnaise to a bowl and combine well.

3. Slather spicy mayonnaise on bread and add meat. For little ones, just use regular mayonnaise. Top with cheese if desired. Serve with fries or chips.

Serves 4.
