Kitchen Reveal and a Giveaway!

new kitchen

It’s finally done! This kitchen has been a work in progress for weeks (actually months), but last week we were able to put the finishing touches on it, and start moving all my things back in the cabinets.

A couple of months ago, we had new granite installed over our wood cabinets. I wanted to keep this kitchen reno low budget and high quality so we opted to keep the existing solid wood cherry cabinets and add a dark dramatic walnut stain with a durable polyurethane finish.

Here’s one of the before shots. The popcorn ceiling was removed and those square flourescent lights were taken out.

We replaced those old lights with strategically places canister LED lights, and put in a shiny new ceiling fan in.

We also took out lots of broken tile in this kitchen. When we first moved into our home, the tile was bubbled in the kitchen. It was so odd. Apparently it had bubbled as the result of a previous foundation repair that had been done years ago. It only took a few days after we moved in before I cracked the tile bubble. We’ve lived with broken tile for months.

After repairing the cracked foundation again, we installed this beautiful porcelain tile. Porcelain tile is great for heavy traffic areas like the kitchen because it resists cracking and chips.

I really liked the flow of the original kitchen and the amount of storage, so we kept everything pretty much in the same place.

One small change that I did make though was to add a wine cooler to where the desk area use to be. I reasoned that a KitchenAid Wine cooler was a much better use of the space. Above the wine cooler is the one thing we didn’t touch – one of those old intercom radio systems. We wanted to remove it, but the guy helping us advised us not too, and just replace it later with a newer model. So that will be a project for another day.

We replaced the old stove with this beautiful KitchenAid double oven and microwave hood combo. My old microwave wasn’t even vented outside, it blew in the kitchen, so every time I cooked, I had to open the patio door and use the ceiling fan in the kitchen as an exhaust fan. It was crazy. The exhaust on this microwave is so powerful, and best of all it’s venting outside now!

When we first moved in, there was a huge refrigerator in our kitchen, too bad it didn’t work. We had to find a little make due refrigerator the same weekend we moved in. Unfortunately, the defroster and ice maker stopped working in it soon after we got it. I can’t tell you how man times I defrosted that thing with my hair dryer. It drove me nuts.

We replaced it with this gorgeous KitchenAid refrigerator. I love it so much. The french doors weren’t something that I thought I would love as much as I do, but they are just wonderful. And that little drawer, it’s just perfect for all your produce. No more lost half used fruits and vegetables falling to the back of the refrigerator and rotting.

new fridge and sink

Just behind it is a KitchenAid dishwasher. It’s a dream. It’s so quiet, I can barely hear it running. I have to check and see what color the light is – blue if it’s on, green when it’s done.

And look just above it – a knife magnet. I’ve been wanting one of those for years, and never really had a spot to put it. Now as I wash my knives I just pop them up there to dry.

trash can

And this little puppy is a KitchenAid trash compactor. No more pushing down and stomping garbage for me, now I have a compactor! I installed this guy where my kitchen trash cabinet originally was. My son loves using it, my husband is amazed, it’s just the coolest new toy right now.

garbage disposal

And guess what’s under the sink? A 1 hp KitchenAid garbage disposal. This thing is not only super powerful but so quiet. My old one was strong, but so incredibly loud. This one is whisper quiet. It also has  multi-grind technology that’s strong enough to handle even a corn husk. But the coolest thing about it is that to turn it on, you place the magnetic stopper in the sink and turn it. So no more silverware getting eaten by the garbage disposal.

I am so lucky to have had KitchenAid provide the appliances for my kitchen remodel. I’ve been able to marry elements from my old kitchen with brand new state of the art appliances to make a very relaxing, functional and durable space for our family for years to come.
