March is the 30th annual National Frozen Foods month! In the spirit of frozen foods, I went ahead and caved a few weeks ago and bought a little deep freezer. We had several when I was a kid, and I wasn’t going to get one for my own home, but I am so happy I did. I can’t tell you how much easier it makes my life. I can store the other half of the buy one get one free sale loafs of breads, extra meats I buy at Cosco, and so many other things. It’s so nice having a large spacious freezer where everything is neatly organized too.
I can also stock up on out of season frozen fruits and vegetables to make stir fries, smoothies and even sorbets. The freezer section is where you will find the best price on those out of season goodies that you crave. I also buy fish sticks, chicken nuggets and fries for my son for snacks. They make great after school snacks to accompany fresh fruit and cut up veggies.
But there’s so much more in the freezer isle. Did you know that the freezer aisle comprises 3,700+ different, delicious foods ranging from nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables to decadent ice creams and novelties?
Here’s a infographic that I found very informative about frozen foods and their path from farm to table.
But back to dinner. I don’t know why I have waited so long to share this easy recipe with you. It’s one of our favorite quick and easy meals, and is perfect to make for company too when you have picky eaters coming over. It looks cute and it’s just simple peperoni pizza. If your making it just for your family, you can add any of your favorite pizza toppings and make this pizza twist all your own.
For this pizza twist, I just started with frozen Bridgford bread dough right from my grocer’s freezer.
Then I halved a piece of dough lengthwise, rolled it out and filled with pizza toppings.
After topping the dough with sauce, pepperoni and cheese, I pinched the dough together around the toppings and twisted the dough together. Then I brushed with a whisked egg and topped with grated Parmesan cheese.
Then after baking, you get a large, soft pizza foll, perfect for your family’s dinner. I served this roll with a fresh Caesar salad.
Yield: Serves 6
1 loaf frozen bread dough, defrosted and at room temperature
1 tablespoon corn meal
1 tablespoon flour
2/3 cup pizza sauce
1/2 cup pepperoni
8 oz mozzarella cheese, cut into strips
1/4 cup shredded Parmesan
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Heat oven to 400°. Cut bread dough in half lengthwise. Spread a large work surface with cornmeal. Place both pieces of dough on work surface and dust lightly with flour. Roll dough to about 4 inches wides and about 22 - 24 inches in length. Spoon pizza sauce in the middle of the dough and top with peperoni and cheese. Pinch dough around filling and seal edges.
On a greased cookie sheet, twist dough around and form the pizza roll. Whisk egg and garlic powder and brush pizza twist liberally. Sprinkle on Parmesan cheese. Bake pizza twist for 25 - 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
